March 7th, 2012 was an epic night for Impact Newberg. With 22 guys rolling and another 20 IPT members cheering us on we promoted four to the next level. Rob Lukinich, Richard Wheeler and Don Chambers received their purple belts, Gary Patterson his blue belt. Along with the belt promotions we gave stripes to Matt Leech (4 stripe brown), Woody Little (4 stripe purple), Anthony Renaldo (2 stripe blue), Zaach Comfort (2 stripe white), Zach Ehlrich (2 stripe white).

Since we started our small group in a garage back in 2000 Impact Newberg has come a long way. We see a long, bright future ahead of us!

Impact Jiu Jitsu sent 11 warriors to compete in the San Francisco International Open on February 26th. It was a great day of competition with Impact capturing many medals.

First to compete was Bryan Torres in the blue belt heavyweight division. He dominated his opponent and won by points which sent him into the semi-finals. He faced a tough seasoned competitor. His competitor ended up winning the match by a couple points. It was a great showing for Bryan in his first gi tournament competition. Cole Rogers was up next in the white belt lighweight division.

Cole was very explosive and scored points with takedowns and guard passes and beat his first opponent by points. The explosiveness that Cole used in his first match used up much of his energy so he was not able to stabilize his second opponent and cost him the match. Cole learned what he needs to work on to be more successful and will be back for more.

Michael Richeson was next in the Masters (30 years of age and older) blue belt featherweight division. He easily handled his first opponent for the victory but ended up losing in the finals by points. Michael would later go on to compete in the Masters blue belt absolute division, which is all weight classes. He would face a 300+ pound competitor, almost twice his size. Michael gave it his all and had his opponent in a couple bad positions, but the size difference was just too great and his opponent ended up winning.

Woody Little was up next in the Senior 2 (40+ years old) Purple Belt Ultra Heavy weight division. Woody’s first match unfortunately did not go as planned and he succombed to a choke. Woody would then go on to the Absolute division and have success. He thoroughly controlled his first opponent for the submission victory. Woody tried for a flying triangle in his second match, but was unable to secure the submission. He had a good match, but lost to a kimura lock.

Bryan Marugg was up next in the purple belt lightweight division. Bryan had some very tough competitors in his division. Bryan dominated all three of his opponents to win the gold medal. He beat all of his opponents by points in a near shut out victory. This was a good test for Bryan who plans on competing in the Pan Ams and Worlds Championship tournaments this year.

Mark Pagaduan also dominated all of his opponents to win the gold medal in the Masters Purple Belt Featherweight division. He had three tough matches, but controlled all of his opponents for easy victories.

Gary Patterson was next in the white belt senior 1 heavyweight division. He quickly took his first opponent down and mounted him. Gary then worked an Ezekial choke in for the submission victory. Gary then won his final match by points.

Andrew Wong was up next in the Masters Brown Belt medium heavy division. Andrew’s opponent pulled guard and swept him. Andrew was down on points but could not work any offense as his opponent nullified his game. Andrew lost the match.

Michael Chapman was up next in the Black Belt Senior 1 Feather weight division. He had a tough match against the European Open champion. Michael and his opponent traded takedowns and had a back and forth match. Michael would later capture and tight armbar, but his opponent would not submit and Michael would end up losing the match on points.

Armand Debruge was our final competitor. He only had one match in his weight class, Masters Black Belt Lightweight division, as his first opponent did not show. Armand’s first match was in the finals of the division. His opponent quickly pulled guard. Armand quickly got a deep X-Choke submission locked up. The submission was so deep that his opponent quickly tapped out less than 30 seconds before the match started. Armand then did the Masters Absolute black belt division and once again dominated his three opponents to win another gold medal at the black belt level. Armand was winning by points in his finals match and could have rode out the victory, but with 30 seconds left Armand wanted to finish with style. He attacked and attacked his opponent in the last 30 seconds and almost submitted his opponent with a tight bow and arrow choke. Armand was unable to finish the choke, but still got the victory.

Recently, Clifton Harski came to my facility, Impact Performance Training & Jiu-jitsu to teach a MovNat workshop. This is one of those workshops that I was incredibly excited for. My friend Mike Richeson (photographer, videographer and all around smart dude) first mentioned Movnat to me well over a year ago. It went in one of my cauliflower ears and out the other. Honestly, being in the fitness industry, I always get asked “have you heard of this” or “have you heard of that”, and usually brush most things off as a gimmick. I was wrong and I should have paid more attention to what Mike was saying. Then I had posted a picture on Facebook of me do a log get up in the woods while we were camping. Some one on the Facebook thread mentioned MovNat, Erwan and now my long lost brother, Clifton. This mentioning drove me to the MovNat website where I read and watched videos that simply resonated with my philosophy about movement to my very core. As I read, watched and listened, I thought to myself “These guys friggin’ get it!”

Back to the workshop…. If you have seen the MovNat videos, you may think that it’s simply “working out” outside. That’s wrong. It’s much more than that. First, the environment can be anywhere; indoors or outdoors. And with the rain so heavy in the Northwest (especially in January), Clifton was able to beautifully demonstrate that to the participants. He successfully coached the MovNat philosophy both in the gym and outside (Yes we braved the weather. We are Oregonians and being cold and wet doesn’t scare us!). What I look for in a coach, is not only their ability to teach, but their ability to progress and regress tasks according to the individuals current capabilities. Clifton did this with great professionalism and attention to detail and that is the SINGLE most important quality of a coach.

I really believe MovNat is something far more important than people realize. We are drenching ourselves in artificial air, artificial light, artificial foods while strapping ourselves to chairs, couches and at best, going to a gym to sit in a machine to produce artificial movement. What’s worse is we are force feeding our children this non-sense and literally destroying the very idea of what it means to be a human. Watch the video but more importantly watch all of the smiles in the video and do yourself a favor….. go to a MovNat workshop.

DN
